How to write a brief a specialist can price in one message
By the BrandForge team · Updated · 2 min read
The short answer
A good brief answers six questions in plain words: what you want to achieve, who it is for, what exactly should be delivered, what you already have, when you need it and what you can spend. With those six answers a specialist can give you a firm price in one reply instead of a call.
The six questions
- The goal: what changes for your business when this is done.
- The audience: who will see or use it, in one sentence.
- The deliverable: the exact thing you will receive, and in which formats or sizes.
- What you already have: logo, copy, photos, an existing site, logins.
- The deadline: a date, and whether it is fixed.
- The budget: a number, even a rough one.
A template to copy
- I want to [goal] so that [result].
- It is for [audience].
- Please deliver [deliverable], in [formats or sizes].
- I already have [assets].
- I need it by [date].
- My budget is [amount].
Paste it into a BrandForge task as it is. The team answers with a price, or with the one question that is still missing.
Vague and clear, side by side
| Vague | Clear |
|---|---|
| I need a website | A one-page site for my bakery with the menu, opening hours and a contact form, by 15 March |
| Make me some ads | Three vertical video ads for Instagram Reels to sell our new running shoe to women aged 25 to 40 |
| Help with social media | Seven posts for next week announcing our spring sale, in our brand colours, for Instagram and LinkedIn |
The gaps that cost the most
Two missing answers cause most price surprises: the number of versions or rounds of changes, and who provides the words and pictures. Say both. If you are not sure, say that too; a good specialist will propose a sensible default.
Questions people ask
- How long should a brief be?
- Six to ten sentences is enough for most tasks. Longer is fine when you have details, but the six answers matter more than the length.
- What if I do not know my budget?
- Give a range you would be comfortable with. On BrandForge you drag the compensation to where you are comfortable; the team accepts it or proposes another, so nothing commits you.
- Can AI help me write the brief?
- Yes. Describe your goal in a BrandForge chat and it answers with a plan and the questions still open; you can turn that into a task in one step.
