How to get your business named in ChatGPT and other AI answers

By the BrandForge team · Updated · 2 min read

The short answer

AI assistants name businesses they can read, understand and confirm in other places. Let their crawlers into your site, answer the questions your buyers ask in plain sentences, describe your business the same way on every profile and directory, and earn genuine reviews and mentions. It is good SEO with more weight on clarity and consistency.

Let the assistants read your site

AI companies publish the names of their crawlers. If your robots.txt blocks them, the assistant cannot read your pages. OpenAI lists its crawlers in its documentation, and Google explains how its AI features use your site in Search Central. Allow the ones you want, and keep private areas such as accounts blocked.

An llms.txt file at the root of your site gives assistants a short, plain-text summary of who you are and which pages matter. BrandForge publishes one at /llms.txt.

Answer questions the way people ask them

People ask assistants full questions: "who can build a booking site for my salon?", "how much does a logo cost?". Pages that use those questions as headings and answer them in the first two or three sentences are easy to quote. Add the details below the short answer, and mark up your frequently asked questions with FAQ structured data.

Say who you are the same way everywhere

Assistants trust what they can confirm. Use the same name, the same one-line description, the same category and the same links on your site, your Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, directories and social profiles. Add Organization structured data to your site that lists those profiles, so they are clearly the same business.

Be mentioned where assistants look

Reviews on trusted sites, helpful answers in forums and communities, videos, and articles that mention you all add up. Earn them honestly: answer questions where your buyers already ask them, and ask happy clients for a review. Fake reviews and copied posts can get you removed from the very places you want to appear.

Get new pages found quickly

Submit your sitemap in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, and use IndexNow to tell participating search engines the moment a page changes.

Check what they say about you

Once a month, ask ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity the questions your buyers ask, and note whether you are named and what they say. Fix what is wrong at the source: your site, your profiles, your reviews.

Questions people ask

Is GEO different from SEO?
It builds on SEO. The same basics matter, crawlable pages and good answers, with more weight on short, quotable answers and on being described consistently across many sites.
How long until an assistant mentions my business?
It varies by assistant and by how often it refreshes what it knows. New pages can appear in AI search results soon after they are indexed; changes to what a model knows without searching take longer.
Should I block AI crawlers?
Only if you do not want to appear in AI answers. Blocking them keeps your content out, and keeps your business out of their recommendations too.
